ABOUT

 

What is the AIR?



The American Institute of Research Assessment (commonly stylized as the AIR) is a standardized test meeting No Child Left Behind requirements. The AIR for grades 3-8 measures students on what they know and are able to do in various subjects. For third grade, students are tested in reading and math.

 

Facts about the third grade AIR:

​

  • Reading both Fall and Spring

  • Two Days of 90-Minute Tests

  • Reading passages of various genres (informational, realistic fiction, folktales, historical fiction, poetry) and questions about the passages

  • Multiple choice and short/extended response

  • Short response (2 points) - graphic organizer, list, events from the story, details to support an idea

  • Extended response (4 points) - sequencing chart, listing events from a story or facts from an article, problem/solution, character change (B-M-E)
